How to slow down

As hints of the old “normal” life start to nudge us back into a lifestyle of busyness, our yoga practice is a reminder to slow down, breathe, and savor the moments. As a transition to a new normal might not come easily to everyone, here are some tips on how to slow down, one step at a time:

1- Put your phone away

Smartphones are designed to distract us from the present moment and keep us constantly on our toes with push notifications – it doesn’t need much explaining! Make a habit of putting your phone away periodically, to pay attention to your inner landscape.

2- Get outside

Fresh air, sunshine and exposure to the little wonders of nature can do a lot to help you stay present, bringing your mind back to the “now” – a great way to slow down a racing mind.

Plus, that natural dose of vitamin D is essential for your mental health, being in nature is good for your eyesight, and it’ll help you sleep better.

3- Breathe

Take long, measured, deep breaths, taking as long to breathe in as to breathe out. Focusing on your breath in this way can slow down your heart rate and bring you a sense of calm.

4- Eat (and drink) mindfully

Take the time to sit down and enjoy your meals and tea breaks. Savour your food and eat more slowly: it’s better for your digestion, and if you have a tendency to eat more than you need to, mindful eating will help you to enjoy more healthy portions.

5- Make time for yourself

Whether it’s yoga, meditation, or watching the sunset: make time for yourself. Practice being present in your body, and noticing how the sensations change. Notice your surroundings, and appreciate it for what it is.
